Francesca Patterson

Demonstration and teaching the use of the human voice (beyond structured language) as a means of bridging diverse cultural patterns. Music is a universal language. Francesca inspires people to use their voices to express ideas, emotions and to empower them.

Francesca Patterson has worked twenty-three years as a nurse and counselor to youth, families and groups. She had a mixed-race marriage, and a mixed-race child.

Susan Brelin Bechio

By becoming aware of common values and attitudes, we have the seed for intentional community to begin. This interactive work will explore how diverse cultural identities are anchored in a common relatedness to nature's rhythms and cycles.

Susan is a cross cultural educator who teaches humans about their deep connection with nature. Her "Ecology Learning Circles" are held at the Human Development Center in Coeur d'Alene.

Marilyn Trail's experiential workshop will focus on discovering what makes for a resilient community.

A faculty member of Washington State University's Spokane County Cooperative Extension, Marilyn Trail specializes in helping build resilience in youth, families and community. She has extensive experience as a counselor, teacher and leader.

This workshop will involve a handout questionnaire on being a diversity change agent. The group will then develop ideas for taking action handouts.

The Changing Face of Racism

James Waller

This is a discussion on the changing face of racism in

America. "Old-fashioned racism" will be contrasted with "modern racism." Participants will experience, and learn about, the ways in which psychologists measure "modern racism." Finally, the implications for the

changing face of racism in understanding race relations in America will be explored.

Some of the material presented will come from Waller's book, "Face to Face: The Changing State of Racism Across America."

James Waller is a Professor, Department of Psychology, Whitworth College.

The Psychology of Hate: Racism and Homophobia

Helen Bonser

A comparison of hate and prejudice issues related to racism and homophobia. Together we will explore empowerment for overcoming, identifying what it is, eliminating it, and developing a community action plan.

Helen Bonser is a state certified diversity trainer and certified health counselor. She has been in private practice for 13 years.
